What will we do? Departing the US from your hometown to Tokyo, we will arrive the next day and stay the night in Tokyo. In the morning, the June trips will travel to the islands of Okinawa. We’ll spend 3 nights and 4 days exploring the Hawaii of Japan snorkeling in the reefs and exploring the unique marine environment in southern islands. The May group will head north to Hokkaido to discover Shiretoko National Park (UNESCO site) and the historic Ainu culture. Here, the sperm whale is often sited and the cherry blossoms bloom in May. All trips will spend time in Osaka where we will be exposed to the culture and marine history of Japan with activities such as a traditional tea ceremony, visits to Japan’s historic temples and shrines, and world class aquariums.
We’ll ride the famous Shinkansen bullet train back to Tokyo to experience the world’s largest city. Take part in the famous Shibuya crossing, visit Tokyo’s electric town, tour the Natural Science Museum and experience the unique culinary dishes that Japan has to offer. Regardless of age, we have activities to meet everyone’s interests. From discussions on Japan’s marine challenges, such as overfishing and the effects of whaling, to exploring the roles of communities in protecting natural resources, this program is designed to inspire meaningful engagement with ocean conservation while offering a full cultural experience.
